From Good to Great

The one quality that I believe is most critical for a writer (particularly a Kingdom writer) to have is the ability to NOT take yourself seriously. To be personally unaffected but yet still deeply impacted by the journey, I find, is the best course.

Writers who can stand outside of an ever-evolving environment; both observant and compassionate; are open to the opportunity to see life in a way that will help them translate it on paper. They are not so identified with their experiences or the experiences of others that they struggle to see the stories and insights (or revelations) that lie below the surface.

To laugh at oneself; To realize that the gift is so much greater than the person; To disconnect from one emotion in order to connect to another that may be foreign to you personally but familiar to the characters that you are called to write; This is what makes a good writer great.
